Thoughts on Exhaust Vacuum Augmentation

I have been aware of some combined cycle powerplants for quite a while, and I have not yet heard of anyone attempting to treat the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine like as if it were a steam engine which have a dramatic power increase when the exhaust is ejected into a good vacuum environment. a substantial portion of the engines pumping loss is nearly eliminated by reducing the exhaust backpressure. I am thinking […]

Cooling Without Air Conditioning In the Deep South

It is not only feasible, it can be far more economical than building a conventional home. Alright…First, when your average daily temperature is uncomfortably high, you do not want to build with massive materials which will only make it hot and miserable 24 hours a day, instead of just in the afternoon. For hot humid climates there are two approaches which work relatively well. One is to earth couple the house, by berming, slab floor, […]

Drain Heat Recovery System

This looks in principle to be a good idea. It often occurred to me that a whole lot of heat was going straight down the drain after bathing or during showering. The construction of this device looks so simple – it would be easy to make one cheaply using 2″ copper pipe and a coil of flexible copper tubing. For best heat conductivity it would be a good idea to solder the spiral tube to […]

Air Conditioner Electric Cord Gets Hot

I have an air conditioner sitting on a window sill. Just lately, when it’s running, it shuts down by itself, and the electric cord gets hot. Last night, it shut down again, and I could see black marks at the end of the electric cord and the wall outlet. Looks like it’s been burned. Can someone tell me what’s wrong with my air conditioner? — There is a resistance connection at the outlet. Probably caused […]

Apartment window treatments if there is a metal frame?

I just moved into an apartment recently and it has metal frames around the windows. I bought rod extensions for curtains but we have air conditioners taking up half of the double window in the living room and bedroom. I bought fabric to temporarily give us privacy. Does anyone have better suggestions for types of window treatments that won’t block our ac but still look nice and provide privacy? We can’t put anything in the […]

End of season coil cleaning?

I was planning to have some AC coil cleaning service done next year. However, the AC guy told me the old refrigerant will phase out next year and would be expensive to refill. He advice me to have my coil cleaned this year instead. Should I listen to him or find someone else? Does it make sense to clean the coil this late in the season? — Do you have straight air conditioning or a […]

Bottom of furnace is wet

I have a furnace that uses a little motor to drag in air to burn and then blows the exhaust out another pipe. This thing has a drain pipe that lets the water generated by the burn to flow into the drain. That pipe is still dripping but now there appears to be extra water in the bottom compartment of the furnace where the big blower motor lives. This can’t be doing that blower any […]

Room on one breaker – still power in 1 outlet

Last night, my sister had everything on in my daughters room, the air conditioner, the ceiling fan & light, another fan, then turned on the oxygen compressor. something blew, but the a/c is still on. The room has its own 15amp breaker, all the wiring and breaker was installed 4 years ago so age shouldn’t be an issue. The breaker doesn’t appear to be tripped, I still went down the line turning them off and […]

Air conditioning issues

Maybe someone can shed some light on an air condition problem. My son bought a house with an older unit, (orig) He called out someone who said the unit is leaking oil. Does anyone know what would leak oil besides the Motor? and the bearings are bad. hm, again sounds like the Motor. He does have a policy that went with the house, for repairs, but so far they seem to wiggle out of paying. […]
