Waste Oil Conversion

I’ve been playing with waste oil burners etc and the thought suddenly struck me that there is a lot of energy locked up in the old crankcase oil I use. Has anyone done any experiments with producing a pure fuel from the dirty stuff? Excuse my lack of the correct terminology but could it be heated and a more pure fuel condensed off. I assume that different temperatures produce different types of fuel but I […]

Combustion Chamber Size Question

I have searched for information for a ratio or some standard size to base a home built furnace body combustion chamber in relation to burner size. So far I have either been overlooking or not looking in the right place if the information is out there. Does anyone have a good ratio for chamber volume per given amount of BTU/HR or any other standard… most can be pretty easily converted from one format to another… […]

Conversion of Riello to Burn SVO

I was thinking about converting a Riello Gulliver RG0.R to burn rapeseed oil. The oil is readily available here and sells for about half the price of HHO and parts for the Riello are easily accessible. The Riello is a “normal” residential burner with a pump operating at 12 bar. I was thinking about removing the pump and the complete nozzle holder assy and manufacture and install a new assy with a Delavan SNA nozzle […]

Questions for Getting My Burner Running Right

I ordered a nozzle (0.5gph) adaptor, and thermal snap switches from Jessie and installed them on an old burner I had lying around although I don’t know who makes it. I am good at building and figuring stuff out, but new to oil burners so I am not sure how to compare my results. I also made my own Kagi style retention head but I only had pictures to go off of (from a stainless […]

Extended Combustion Chamber

I tackled the long-flame-short-chamber problem for my boiler. The boiler rebuilding I mentioned last week kept my mind busy. Many of us are trying to shorten and/or widen the flame. But do we really want that? I think the answer is no. The short orange flame doesn’t burn clean and gives less BTU output. Downsizing the nozzle rating also less BTU output. So why not extending the combustion chamber. An extension between burner and door […]

WVO too Hot to Burn in Factory Housing?

I was at my local county fair today and I saw someone who was selling WVO burners. He was telling me that it burns too hot for the factory housing (sorry don’t know the correct term). I know that many people have been burning for a while and I was wandering if anyone has had any side effects from this. Do you need to do anything special to the housing to make it withstand the […]

FAQ on Converting Burners to Waste Oil/Biodiesel

1) Q. Can I modify my existing gun-style oil burner to burn waste oil (motor or veggie)? A. Yes, but it is highly recommended that you purchase a used oil burner and keep the original burner set up the same. (In case you aren’t successful or run out of waste oil or your wife gets a cold shower) 2) Q. How do I get started? Get a used gun-style oil burner, like a Beckett AF […]

Burning WMO without Smoke?

I use a German NordWest burner, similar to a Beckett. Got myself a siphon nozzle SNA .75. Welded an oil and air preheater with three 250 Watt bandheaters, controlled by an adjustable oven thermostat. Run it on 200 degrees. Solenoids for both oil and air. For oil, I don’t use a constant level device (tried one however). I reduced pressure on the original oil burner pump, but couldn’t get it stabilized under 40 PSI. So […]

Wood Burning Water Heater to WMO Water Heater

I have an out door wood burning water heater that heats water to heat the house and also provides hot water for showers etc. Cutting and spliting wood has gotten old. I would like to convert it to burn waste motor oil. I like the method that I see Eric is using for the burner. I contacted Jesse to get some nozzles on the way when the subject of nozzle size came up. The fire […]
